CONGRESS TONIGHT!

Congress plays the Grand Opening of The Waldorf tonight (how many grand openings is that place going to have?) with Nu Sensae. Here is a review I did for their demo that ran in the pages of Absolute Underground.

Congress is made up of ex-members of 3 Inches of Blood, Pride Tiger and Jaws, but may not really hold any of those bands as an influence. The opening track ‘H-Bomb’ starts with a funky drumbeat, distorted bass and crunchy guitar, then the deathly vocals of Jamie Hooper (former singer of 3IOB) kick in with fierce intensity. It’s good to hear him back behind the microphone and with songs titles like ‘Sybian Fuck Unit 7X’ and ‘Rotten Snake Corpse’ you know he doesn’t disappoint in the lyrical department either. The music may be metal at heart, but has rock drumming that keeps it honest. The lack of double bass or blast beats doesn’t steal any of the evil tendencies this music still portrays. And the tempo is all over the map, slow, fast AND mid, they do it all. Trying to pin this band with a genre wouldn’t be easy as the band grabs the best parts from many different styles, with rock n roll drums! What more could you ask for?

While I was attending Burger Fest this summer I felt some feelings. I stood outside of the Waldorf watching and listening to Joyce Collingwood performing their reunion set and it took me back to a time that seemed a little more care free. That band played some great shows a few years back and even garnered a fair amount of attention. While reunion shows typically always disappoint, this would not be one of those times. They shredded a super tight set that left me thinking, 'dang, I missed that band.' And just like a puff of smoke they disappeared for good. You know it's officially over when they're throwing every piece of remaining Joyce Collingwood merch they have left into the crowd. BISON bc @ The Rickshaw June 18th 2011.

When I first started this blog I assumed I would use it to review all the shows I went to see. I was the proud new owner of a digital camera (that I hardly know how to use) so there was really no excuse. Unfortunately I got lazy and just ended up using this blog to post my older material and unedited things that I submitted to magazines. Until now! Hopefully this will start a trend of show reviews, and who knows, maybe I'll even start bringing my camera to shows again. For now I'll just steal pictures off of Facebook that I find of the shows I attend leaving the picture taking to the professionals. So we arrived to The Rickshaw around 10:15pm and paid our $5 cover charge. It was The Rickshaw theater's 2nd year anniversary, and customer appreciation show, so cheap cover and beer! THE WINSTON CAMPAIGN - From Rags to Riches.

It's always really weird when you hear that a friend has died. It's somewhat surreal and I never really know what to say. Mike was truly an original dude, and we shared the same sense of humour and anti social tendencies. But he was a crazy smart guy, and we had a lot of good times together. One of those good times was when I invited him and Dan over to my place to drink beer and interview them for Absolute Underground. They had an insane story about how they went to Mexico to play with NOFX, and it ended up being so good we couldn't fit it all in one issue. After I heard that Mike died I looked it up and sure enough there was an unedited long version, so I'm gonna post that here, with Part 2 to follow in the next day or two.  R.I.P.
